Senate Passes Immigration Reform

Today the Senate passed a landmark bill that would provide millions of undocumented immigrants a chance to become citizens. The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744) promises to overhaul U.S. immigration laws for the first time since 1986. In addition to providing a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, the bill would increase security along the Mexican border, and increase temporary visas for high and lower-skilled workers.

The bill passed with strong bipartisan support, by a vote of 68-32. However it may face many difficulties in the house, where House Speaker John Boehner expressed that he would not allow consideration of any measure that does not have the support of most of the House’s 234 Republicans.
